Objective: Dynamic, colour changing and architectural lighting

Taunton Crematorium, a Grade II listed building, was built in the early 1960s and is architecturally rich in stunning original features. Services take place within the Chapel which comprises a variety of interesting building details including a double height glass wall providing a frame to the garden views, an asymmetric pitched stone-clad elevation with floor to ceiling stained-glass windows and above all of this is a concertinaed white wooden ceiling. The interior is an absolute pleasure to visit, yet the catafalque space which holds the focus of the congregation throughout the service had the least architectural significance and appeal.

The Lighting People worked closely with the client to clearly understand the project objective, which involved increasing the architectural importance of the catafalque though coloured, dynamic lighting. The client desired a lighting system that would allow a colour of significance to be selected as the back drop during services. In addition to this, a twinkling 'starry sky' was imagined directly above the catafalque which was itself to have a 'floating' appearance.

The Lighting People designed a scheme specifying highly efficient LED technology with digital controls. The scheme allows for absolutely any colour to be selected for the periphery wall in a variety of intensities, so pastel and bright colours are available. Similarly, the catafalque's 'floating' lighting can also be adjusted from a cosy warm white to a fresh cool white light. Above the catafalque a starry night sky twinkles at a preselected speed.

The system, operated through a handheld tablet via Bluetooth, works as a whole or in individual parts and it has the ability to be dimmed down low or intensely brightened up. Once the design had been completed The Lighting People supplied and installed the bespoke fittings out of normal hours and provided commissioning for the system which included installing a variety of pre-programmed lighting scenes.

The lighting scheme requires no maintenance, is extremely energy efficient and presents opportunity for incredibly bespoke services to be created, making the experience more personal and special.

The Sporting Duchess, a high-end clothing retailer, required a specialist lighting design for their new high street premises, a Grade II listed building.

The existing lighting installation comprised T8 fluorescent light fixtures. These fittings are not only inefficient but also much more suited to a commercial office environment as opposed to a clothing boutique, where brightness, high colour rendition and lighting hierarchy are vital to the successful presentation of merchandise.

The Lighting People's design team began by performing an analysis of the energy use on the existing lighting, as well as providing the client with a variety of energy efficient lighting design concepts which later provided a foundation on which to base the design.

The client's preferred design concepts provided a basis on which to base the new lighting scheme. The finished lighting design only uses LED light sources and appears clean, fresh and intended. The scheme uses track lighting for flexibility, allowing the layout of the shop to change as often as required, furthermore these fixtures additionally provide highlighting opportunities to specific displays to intentionally gain customers' attention on specific display items. Adjustable downlights produce comfortable ambience and high intensity window lights provide focus on mannequin outfits. Within the fitting rooms halo mirror lighting ensures light is provided from a variety of angles to allow the customer to comfortably see the clothing item clearly.

The Lighting People used 3D lighting design software to calculate the required lighting levels, which were represented in digital model, in addition to a reflected celling plan drawing and calculation diagrams representing how much light the scheme will provide. In line with the appropriate regulations, a compliant emergency lighting scheme was also incorporated.

The scheme uses the latest LED technology and is highly energy efficient. The design requires no maintenance and reduces the energy use by 6,791kWh per annum, providing the client with an annual financial saving of £1,121 per year.

The client has reviewed the experience and outcome as having "...exceeded their expectations".

The Sporting Duchess
Somerset

This project consisted of ten large call centers, with car parking. The new lighting solution replaced older fluorescent technology with state of the art LED products incorporating daylight dimming control to realise an energy saving in excess of 80%. The success of this project was discussed in detail at the annual LUX Live exhibition in London.

British Gas Offices
Cardiff

The project comprised all areas of the campus, including teaching spaces, break out areas and halls of residence. The objective was to save energy. Therefore LED products replaced fluorescent and incandescent fittings throughout, resulting in an overall 68% energy saving.

South Tyneside College
South Shields

The brief for this large healthcare project was to reduce the financial cost of the lighting, in addition to improving the environment for patients and staff. The approach incorporated state of the art LED fixtures, which not only proved extremely energy efficient with integral lighting control, but also incorporated circadian lighting features. These specialist fittings changed their output to simulate the colour of the sun throughout the day, which has great benefits to the users' well-being. Furthermore, the specification brought this scheme up to date in terms of building regulations and current legislation. The scheme saved in excess of 75% of energy.

Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospitals
London

The university asked for their students' union environment to be low on energy usage but high on visual impact. The result was a visually exciting LED lighting scheme with the fixtures positioned on a variety of levels as well as incorporating irregular ceiling panels. Where daylight was limited the spaces still felt bright due to specifying fittings with a cooler light output, much closer to the colour of daylight.

Nottingham Trent Students' Union
Nottingham

The two predominant requirements of this brief were firstly to provide a lighting scheme to produce significant financial savings to unlock SALIX funding. Secondly to design calm, concentration enhancing environments for the pupils with learning disabilities. The result was a complete LED scheme realising an energy saving of 72%, using fixtures with a cool white light output in special areas to enhance the user experience and well-being.

High-end luxury was required for this newly refurbished property in a rural location in Cornwall. The design delivered a modern and low energy lighting solution which is clean and minimal, yet inviting and flexible.

The main objective for this barn conversion project was to use lighting to accentuate the juxtaposed traditional and new features. To complement this modern down-lights have been teamed with more traditional light fittings.

The Stables
Gloucestershire

This property, set in a seaside location, has been designed as a comfortable and stylish holiday home to appeal to many visitors. The interior lighting has been designed to make features of the most fundamental elements, such as the stairs, shelves and tables. The finished effect is a warm inviting glow to the whole property, which makes relaxing here easy and enjoyable.
